Music Therapy

Rapid development of modern technologies has completely changed our way of living and our way of looking at things. Now we look upon various alternative ways of healing our minds and bodies instead of just relying on allopathic treatment and medical doctors. Thanks to a wide range of knowledge and new discoveries in various fields, the aim of improving life conditions and increasing human being’s longevity is no longer unattainable. Human life in modern times is so stressful and rapid that scientists are compelled to explore new methods and treatments for improving the emotional and physical health of humans. Therefore, therapies in recent times have focused more on psychological aspects of patients, among which the most remarkable one is believed to be music therapy.

This kind of treatment bases on music interventions to help people cope with stress and regain good health. With various positive effects such as improving emotional well-being, enhancing social behavior and communication abilities, music therapy is considered to be a perfect treatment for depression, autism and other psychological disorders. In addition, people who can benefit from music therapy are varied- from autistic children, unsocial adolescents, depressive adults, elders with mental problems to people who have had brain injuries or those who suffer from Dementia disease.

The concept of use of music in healing is not new. It was first suggested by many philosophers and practiced effectively after World War II when many soldiers suffered from both physical and emotional traumas. As a matter of fact, music therapy was used along with other kinds of treatments and comparisons were made by the scientists. After comparing the results, the scientists have decided to do a great deal of serious research about music’s impact on mental and physical health conditions. Nowadays, music therapy is widely used not only in hospitals but also in clinics, treatment centers and rehabilitation centers etc.

Recent research in many medical centers have proved that music therapy efficiently helped the cancer patients since it created more comfortable states of mind in patients and reduced heart rate, blood pressure, insomnia and pessimism, which directly helped in boosting the immunology system of the body. It is also proved to be safer than pharmaceuticals and other general medical treatments since no side effects have been found so far.

Music therapy can be practiced in various ways depending upon patient’s tastes of music and his/her mental situation. The patient may be required to listen to music for some periods of time during the day, write songs or discuss about the songs’ lyrics. Usually, music therapy is used on a group of individuals so that they can share their feelings among each other easily. Thus listening to music with somebody who is in the same situation or state of mind makes the therapy even more effective and interesting.

When music therapy is used, the music sessions are designed by well-trained therapists under the supervision of qualified medical professionals. Hence the process of practicing music therapy can be considered as safe and helpful. In addition, it is a proven fact that allopathic treatments have undesirable side effects, which may cause potential harm to mental and physical health conditions of a patient although they work fast and eliminate the symptoms clearly. Meanwhile, music therapy can be safely used without any side effects, though good results may take some time to achieve.
